First steps …
I arrived in Tobacco Gardens tonight. Peg, who owns the campground here, hooked me up with a cabin, two hamburgers, ketchup, mustard, and a few cans of Busch beer. It was the kindest of welcomes and the real start of this journey. So, tonight I am relaxing.
Tomorrow morning, I will rise and shine and put on the 45-pound pack. I will turn left out of the campground and then right onto the dirt road that parallels Lake Sakakawea, heading east. I am headed on foot into the heart of oil country. The first thing I will pass, after 5 or 10 minutes of walking, is this oil rig, seen from Tobacco Gardens. According to the state map, the rig is the Nabors X10, drilling for XTO Energy.
I will pass 20 or so other wells during the coming week. I’ll post again here when that’s all done.
